What is the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)?

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of Canada’s key economic immigration programs managed under the Express Entry system. This program provides a special opportunity for individuals with work experience in Canada to obtain permanent residency.

Eligibility Criteria for the Canadian Experience Class

  1. Work Experience in Canada:
  • Duration: You must have at least 12 months (1,560 hours) of work experience in the last three years.
    • This experience can be:
      • Full-time: 30 hours per week for 12 months (1,560 hours in total).
      • Part-time: Your work hours must add up to the equivalent of one year of full-time work, e.g., 15 hours per week for 24 months.
      • Multiple Jobs: Hours from different full-time or part-time jobs can be combined.
    • Job Category: Your work must fall under one of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) categories:
      • TEER 0: Management positions, such as a marketing manager.
      • TEER 1: Jobs requiring a university degree, such as a software engineer.
      • TEER 2: Jobs requiring a diploma or long-term apprenticeship, such as a laboratory technologist.
      • TEER 3: Jobs requiring a diploma or short-term apprenticeship, such as bakers.
    • Work Location: Your work experience must be gained in Canada with a valid work permit. Work done as a refugee or without a work permit is not eligible.

Important Notes:

  • Even if you have left Canada, you can apply for the (CEC) as long as you submit your application within three years of leaving your Canadian job.
  • Paid leave and paid vacation time count toward your Canadian work experience.
  • Remote work for a Canadian company qualifies as Canadian work experience if your salary is issued within Canada. However, working in Canada for a company outside the country does not count.
  • Key Terms:
  • National Occupational Classification (NOC): A system that categorizes all jobs in the Canadian labor market.
  • TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities): A classification system that defines the required education, training, experience, and responsibilities for a job.

 

  • Finding Your NOC Code:

First, you need to find your job code in the (NOC) system. Ensure that your job responsibilities match the description in the (NOC).

Your work experience must include:

  • The main duties listed in the (NOC) job description.
  • Paid work or commission-based work (volunteer or unpaid work does not qualify).

  1. Language Skills:

Accepted Language Tests for the CEC: Your language test must be recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

English:

  • CELPIP: Take the CELPIP-General test.
  • IELTS: Take the IELTS General Training test (“IELTS One Skill Retake” is not accepted).
  • PTE Core: Take the PTE Core test.

French:

  • TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de français
  • TCF Canada: Test de connaissance du français

Language Level Requirements (CLB – Canadian Language Benchmarks):

  • If your NOC level is TEER 0 or 1, you must achieve CLB 7 in all skills.
  • If your NOC level is TEER 2 or 3, you must achieve CLB 5 in all skills.
  1. Intent to Live and Work Outside of Quebec:
  • You must that you intend to live outside of Quebec. Quebec has a separate immigration system.
  1. Work Experience That Does Not Qualify:
  • Self-employment: Work experience gained through self-employment in Canada is not eligible for the (CEC).
  • Work While Studying: Work experience gained while studying full-time in Canada does not count.

Additional Notes:

  • Choosing a Province:
    • When completing your profile, you will be asked where you intend to live in Canada.
    • You are not required to settle in the province you select.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP):
    • If you are nominated by a province, you must live in that province.

Education in the (CEC) Program:

There is no mandatory education requirement for this program. However, if you want to increase your (CRS) score, providing your educational credentials can help.

  • If you studied in Canada, you must submit your diploma and transcripts.
  • If you have a foreign degree, you must submit:
    • Your diploma and transcripts
    • An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

What is an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)?

The (ECA) evaluates whether your foreign education is equivalent to a Canadian credential.

Documents Required for Uploading on the Canadian Immigration Website

For immigration through Express Entry and obtaining the related visa, all required documents must be uploaded online in the system. There is no need to send paper copies of the documents.

If your documents are in a language other than English or French, you must provide an official translation. Additionally, the translation must be accompanied by the translator’s certification or an official translation license, along with a certified copy of the original document.

  1. Employment Documents:

The applicant’s and spouse’s work experience letter should include:

  • Job title.
  • Name, address, and phone number of the workplace.
  • Number of working hours.
  • Annual salary.
  • Summary of job responsibilities.

*It is also recommended to provide tax documents such as T4 slips or NOA (Notice of Assessment) and pay stubs for work experience in Canada.

  1. Language Documents:

Results of officially recognized language tests: IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF.

  1. Identification Documents:
  • Passport: Valid passport of the main applicant, spouse, and children (with at least six months validity from the date of application).
  • Marriage or Divorce Certificates: Marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or death certificate of a spouse (if applicable).
  • Birth Certificates: For all children.
  • Recent Photos: For all family members.
  • Family Relationship Documents: If claiming points through a relative in Canada:
    • Proof of family relationship.
    • Proof of the relative’s Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
    • Proof of the relative’s residence in Canada.
  1. Additional Employment Documents:

If the work experience involves multiple jobs or (NOC) categories, details for each must be provided.

  1. Educational Documents:

Includes the diploma/degree certificate and transcripts. If the education was completed outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required.

  1. Police Clearance Certificate:

A police clearance certificate for the applicant, spouse, and children over 18 years old must be provided for every country where they have lived for more than six months. This certificate is valid for one month and, once officially translated, remains valid for six months.

  1. Medical Examination Documents:

The applicant, spouse, and children must undergo a Medical Exam to determine if they have any health conditions that could impose a heavy burden on Canada’s healthcare system. These exams must be conducted by IRCC-approved physicians and remain valid for one year.
