Visitor Visa / Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

A Canadian Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a limited period. This visa is intended for those traveling for tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business events, or engaging in other temporary activities. It is designed for individuals seeking short-term stays and is not intended for those planning to alter their residency status or re-enter Canada under different categories such as international students, temporary workers, or business visitors. With the required documentation and eligibility, the Visitor Visa provides a reliable pathway to explore Canada’s culture, nature, and professional opportunities.

Who Needs a Visitor Visa?

Most foreign nationals require a Visitor Visa to enter or transit through Canadian airports. Depending on the purpose of the visit and individual circumstances, the visa may be issued as either a Single Entry or Multiple Entry visa.

  • Validity: Usually valid for up to 10 years or until the passport expiry date, whichever comes first.
  • Length of Stay: Typically allows stays of up to six months per entry unless otherwise determined by a border services officer.

Types of Canadian Visitor Visas

  1. Single Entry Visa: Permits a one-time entry into Canada. Once the visitor exits the country, a new visa application is required for re-entry.
  2. Multiple Entry Visa: Allows the holder to enter and leave Canada multiple times during the validity period of the visa. Ideal for those planning to visit Canada frequently, including for short-term educational programs (less than six months).

Super Visa – For Parents and Grandparents: The Super Visa is a special category designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows extended stays of up to five years per visit (as per the changes effective June 2023).

Invitation Letter – Required or Optional?

While not mandatory, submitting an invitation letter can enhance the chances of visa approval. A comprehensive invitation letter should include:

  • Details of the host in Canada (full name, immigration status, address, employment)
  • Visitor’s information (relationship to the host, travel purpose)
  • Financial arrangements and accommodation details during the stay

If You Do Not Have an Invitation Letter: In such cases, you must provide a detailed travel itinerary, including cities you plan to visit, tourist attractions, events, or exhibitions you intend to attend.

Business Visitor Visa

This visa is for individuals visiting Canada for business-related purposes such as attending meetings, conferences, trade shows, or signing contracts, without entering the Canadian labor market or receiving income from a Canadian source.

Main Requirements:

  • Short-term visit (maximum six months)
  • Employment outside Canada
  • Proof of financial means to cover expenses during the stay

Permitted Activities:

  • Participation in meetings, negotiations, or short-term training sessions
  • Post-sale service support
  • Attendance at international exhibitions or conferences

Recommended Documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Business or corporate invitation letter

  • Financial documents proving your ability to cover travel costs

Important Notes:

  • A Visitor Visa does not permit employment or study in Canada. For those purposes, a separate (Work Permit) or (Study Permit) is required.
  • Having a visa does not guarantee entry into Canada. The final decision regarding admission and length of stay is made by the border services officer upon arrival.
