{"id":2360,"date":"2025-05-06T21:29:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T21:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i2canada.ca\/en\/?page_id=2360"},"modified":"2025-05-06T21:29:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T21:29:31","slug":"pgwp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/i2canada.ca\/en\/pgwp\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)<\/strong> is an exceptional opportunity for international students who have graduated from a <strong>Designated Learning Institution (DLI)<\/strong> in Canada. This permit allows you to gain professional work experience in Canada and pave the way for building your career and potentially obtaining permanent residency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Eligibility Criteria for PGWP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are <strong>generally eligible<\/strong> to apply for a PGWP if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You completed a program of study at a PGWP-eligible DLI that lasted at least 8 months (or 900 hours for certain programs in Quebec).<\/li>\n<li>You maintained full-time student status throughout each academic term in Canada (except your final term, which may be part-time).<\/li>\n<li>You apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation of program completion.<\/li>\n<li>Your study permit was valid at some point within those 180 days after graduation and before submitting your PGWP application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Language Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you graduated with a Bachelor&#8217;s, Master&#8217;s, or PhD degree:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must demonstrate proficiency in <strong>English or French<\/strong> with a <strong>minimum level of CLB 7<\/strong> (English) or <strong>NCLC 7<\/strong> (French) in all four language skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you graduated from a college or a non-university program:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must show language proficiency with at least <strong>CLB 5<\/strong> (English) or <strong>NCLC 5<\/strong> (French) in all four skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Important Note: As of November 1, 2024, PGWP eligibility criteria have changed. If you applied before this date, or graduated from a flight school, you are not subject to the new rules.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You do not need to meet the new program-of-study requirements if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You applied for the PGWP before November 1, 2024 (regardless of your level of study).<\/li>\n<li>You graduated from a flight school eligible for PGWP.<\/li>\n<li>You graduated with a Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, or PhD degree.<\/li>\n<li>You applied for a study permit before November 1, 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If none of the above applies to you, refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/study-canada\/work\/after-graduation\/eligibility\/field-of-study.html\">IRCC\u2019s program list<\/a> to confirm whether your program is eligible under the new PGWP criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible programs now fall under <strong>six main categories<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Agriculture and Agri-food<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Health Care<\/li>\n<li>STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)<\/li>\n<li>Trades and Technical Skills<\/li>\n<li>Transportation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>PGWP Validity Duration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>length of your PGWP<\/strong> depends on the duration of your academic program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your <strong>Master&#8217;s program lasted at least 8 months<\/strong>, even if less than 2 years, you may receive a <strong>PGWP of up to 3 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If your program lasted <strong>less than 2 years<\/strong> but at least <strong>8 months<\/strong>, your PGWP will usually match the length of your program (e.g., a 9-month program gets a 9-month PGWP).<\/li>\n<li>If your program lasted <strong>2 years or more<\/strong>, you may be eligible for a <strong>3-year PGWP<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>This does <strong>not<\/strong> apply to <strong>certificate or diploma<\/strong> programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you completed <strong>multiple programs consecutively<\/strong>, each at least 8 months long, your PGWP may combine the durations of all programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: Your passport must be valid for the entire period of the PGWP; otherwise, your PGWP will only be issued until your passport&#8217;s expiry date.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who Is Not Eligible for PGWP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are <strong>not eligible<\/strong> for a Post-Graduation Work Permit if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have already received a PGWP in the past.<\/li>\n<li>You studied English or French as a second language.<\/li>\n<li>You completed more than 50% of your program online (distance learning, e-learning, or correspondence).\n<ul>\n<li><em>Note:<\/em> If you studied online from outside Canada due to COVID-19, you may still qualify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You completed your program at a non-Canadian institution located in Canada.<\/li>\n<li>You studied at a DLI that is not PGWP-eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why Is PGWP Important? <\/strong>Having a PGWP gives you the opportunity to work in Canada after graduation and gain valuable Canadian work experience.
