Sponsorship of a Spouse<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

If you meet the requirements, you can sponsor your spouse or partner for permanent residency in Canada.<\/p>\n

Eligibility Requirements for Sponsoring a Spouse<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Sponsor Requirements:<\/strong>\n
      \n
    • Be at least 18 years old.<\/li>\n
    • Be one of the following:\n
        \n
      • A Canadian citizen.<\/li>\n
      • A permanent resident (you cannot sponsor from outside Canada).<\/li>\n
      • Registered under the Indian Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Not receiving social assistance (except for disability).<\/li>\n
      • Able to provide for the basic needs of the person you\u2019re sponsoring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Income Requirements:<\/strong>\n

        • Generally, no minimum income is required. However, a financial evaluation form is needed if:\n
            \n
          • Your spouse or partner has a dependent child who has their own dependent child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • Who Cannot Sponsor:<\/strong>\n
              \n
            • You\u2019re under 18.<\/li>\n
            • You won\u2019t be living in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.<\/li>\n
            • You\u2019re not a citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Indian Act.<\/li>\n
            • You\u2019re a temporary resident (e.g., student, worker, visitor).<\/li>\n
            • Your permanent residency application is pending.<\/li>\n
            • You lack sufficient funds (if required).<\/li>\n
            • Additional barriers:\n

              • Gained permanent residency through spousal sponsorship within the last 5 years.<\/li>\n
              • Still financially committed to a previous spouse or partner.<\/li>\n
              • Previously applied to sponsor the same person and awaiting a decision.<\/li>\n
              • In prison, detention, or a penitentiary.<\/li>\n
              • Have unpaid immigration or family support debts.<\/li>\n
              • Are bankrupt and haven\u2019t settled debts.<\/li>\n
              • Receiving social assistance (except for disability).<\/li>\n
              • Convicted of specific crimes.<\/li>\n
              • Received a removal order from Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
              • Eligible Individuals:<\/strong>\n
                  \n
                • Spouse:<\/strong> Legally married to you and at least 18 years old.<\/li>\n
                • Common-Law Partner:<\/strong> Lived with you continuously for at least 12 months, unmarried, and at least 18 years old.<\/li>\n
                • Conjugal Partner:<\/strong> Unable to marry or live with you due to legal\/immigration reasons, at least 18 years old, and living outside Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Open Work Permit for Spouses<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  • Eligibility:<\/strong> Spouses\/common-law\/conjugal partners of a sponsor living in Canada.<\/li>\n
